| | In the Tudor Era, miniatures were private images, meant to be shared with intimate friends. They were often exchanged, and often worn on chains or hung from brooches. This is a reproduction of one of two very similar portraits of Anne of Cleves by Hans Holbein. Anne of Cleves was the fourth wife of King Henry VIII, whom he married in 1539 and divorced shortly afterwards because he did not find her attractive. He maintened Anne with a pension and her own estates for life, calling her his "good sister." The miniature, painted in the traditional style using traditional materials arrives in a 2.5" diameter gold-metal round frame with a pendant loop. |
