In the Tudor Era, miniatures were private images, meant to be shared with intimate friends. They were often exchanged, and often worn on chains or hung from brooches. This miniature depicts King Edward VI, the only male child of Henry VIII (his mother was Jane Seymour), who inherited the throne on his father's death. The young Edward was only a boy when he was crowned King, and never lived to reach his majority. A ferverent protestant, Edward's reign saw the most sweeping changes in religion.
The miniature, painted in the traditional style using traditional materials arrives in a 2.5" circular gold-metal frame with a pendant loop.
